I just noticed we hadn't actually started this thread yet. I'm too tired to discuss this right now. Hopefully someone will post before I check back and leave a post tomorrow morning.

I prefer subs to dubs mostly due to the fact that I never like listening to the corporate dubs... or the voice actors who almost always either lack emotion or sound like they are faking emotion. That being said, If I have never watched an anime in japanese, I will watch it in english if I have too. Inuyasha and Yu Yu Hakusho being prime examples.

So far I've never had a problem reading the subs, and taking in the image (without losing much meaning) in one go. If I miss something I will just watch the part a few more times.

I'm sorry, but people who hate/dislike TL Notes are idiots. TL Notes are one of the best things about watching the anime. Take, for instance, Gintama, the anime itself is pretty good but if you didn't have the TL Notes, watching it would make a lot of the episodes either not funny, or just hard to understand. (lost where I was going here)

As far as recycling voice actors. I have no problem with that. And as far as recognizing voice actors in multiple anime. That's something you just have to deal with, there is only a finite number of VA's. As an example of what someone above said, Watch FMA subbed and listen to Ed, then go watch bleach and listen to Hitsugaya, Same voice actor but the only time they sound similar to me is when Hitsugaya freaks out because someone called him short (and like Ed he blows it way out of proportion).

(this is actually a reply I had made in a different forum, same topic.)

I expect an intelligent response to this question, not dubz suck or anything like that.

you guys said everything i wanted to say lol
fat san's and honor soul's opinion is same as mine
i compared yu yu hakusho sub vs dub.. dub wins big time
same goes with dbz and dbgt

i tried listening to abenobashi shopping arcade, vampire hunter D, Vampire hunter D: blood lust, Fullmetal alchemist in dub... all of them were bad compared to subs

Subs all the way, I prefer the original Japanese language being spoken since most dubs seem to suck.
The ONLY anime I'd rather watch dubbed are all the Dragonball [Z, GT, etc] series. Goku just sounds too weird in Japanese. lol

subs are always the best only in very few cases dubs are good like in fullmetal alchemist dub is better but in naruto they dubbed it and showed it on tv and it was an insult to the jap version...so i orefer subs anyday

dubs are good only when you watch an anime without actually watching it...
lol i mean you dont have to look at the screen to know what's happening...there's lots of talk and blah-blahs and a dub is enough...

and plus, seeing a funny little character talking in english just doesnt seem right....

overall,i vote for subs...

well, I prefer Sub, only because I like hearing the original voices.

no strange reasons here.

dubs are for morons who like seeing their anime with shitty voice actors compiled with retarded americanization and are too stupid to read or at least try to understand another language

Clearly sub.
I like watching anime with the original seiyuu voice in my ears...
I don't like the idea of dubbing, especially english voice, since the original "emotion" isn't captured totally...

I clearly vote for subs.
I haven't found any anime shows yet, which I liked more in English.
And even if I did find one, I think I'd still watch it with the original Voices, because that is how the anime was meant to be.

Subs are obviously dominate.  They do a much better job of matching the seiyuus to the personality of the character.  The dub industry is severely lacking in this area.  However, I agree with Ana-chan that when having an anime on for background noise, dubs are ok with some series.
